Hacking Degree Offered at UK Universities. Hacking in the IT sense has been around for decades, with hackers acquiring the skills using the self taught way. Since 2006, universities have decided to offer a degree in what they call ethical hacking, were ethical hacking is basically hacking in controlled conditions. Such cases of ethical hacking, for example, are for system testing and trying to explore system weakness. So ethical hacking is all well and good in theory, but in practise it is educating potential bad guys who will use they newly acquired skills for financial gain etc.

Jennifer Higgins, a forth year student at a university that offers these hacking degrees said “Take, for example, chemistry students, they might know all the chemicals to cause damage but that’s not the sort of thing they’re interested in, they’re interested in putting their knowledge to the greater good”.

What happens if any one of the students decides that there is more money to be made in hacking than compared to ethical hacking?
Albert Gonzalez, a 28 year old expert hacker (self-taught computer genius), who was employed as an informant for an American government department, switched sides to amass a fortune of USD$2.7 million (about £1.6million) after being involved in one of America’s largest cases of identity theft. Ok, with Albert Gonzalez, he is either in jail (-an assumption) or awaiting sentencing on the 8th December 2009 (depending on when you are reading this!). By the way, he was found to be hacking unethically while helping out the government as an informant. Gonzalez will face between 15 to 25 years for a case in Massachusetts, and up to 20 years for a New York case and so on. If his sentences could run concurrently and he is convicted on all charges he could be in jail for hundreds of years, but you know how the legal system is like; he could be released after a couple of years of good behaviour –helping the prison officers with their computer problems! OK, jokes aside, but I hope US jails don’t come with personal computers! –OK that a wrap!
